Semarang air is third worst

SEMARANG: An environmental official from Jakarta yesterday called on the city administration to take steps to reduce air pollution, which he ranked as the third worst in the country after Jakarta and Bandung.

Speaking at a seminar on the air quality in Semarang, Margana, the director of operations of the Environmental Impact Management Agency, said the carbon monoxide level was far too high.

He said emissions from vehicles contribute the largest air pollution, followed by industrial discharge.

Margana suggested that Semarang began adopting the "Blue Sky" program already introduced in Jakarta and other large cities to limit air pollution. (har)
