Seeking Medical Treatment Domestic or Abroad: What Should Be Considered?
The choice of seeking medical treatment abroad has once again become a topic of discussion following the emergence of content from an Indonesian patient comparing domestic examination results with medical services in Penang, Malaysia. This debate has reopened questions regarding the considerations patients must weigh when choosing healthcare facilities, ranging from medical needs and service quality to costs and access to doctors and technology.
On social media, the experiences of patients seeking treatment in Penang have received diverse responses. Some shared positive experiences, while others argued that patients should utilise healthcare facilities in Indonesia as long as their medical needs can be adequately addressed.
The debate also expanded following speculation regarding the background of the content. Some netizens suspected the content was related to the promotion of specific hospitals or medical travel services, although these allegations remain unconfirmed.
Birgita, Director of BerobatkePenang.com, stated that the flow of Indonesian patients to Penang has existed long before the surge in healthcare service promotions via social media. According to her, Indonesians have been travelling to Penang since the early 1990s for health check-ups and specialist treatments.
“The phenomenon of Indonesian citizens crossing to Penang for healthcare services is not actually a seasonal trend or merely the result of viral marketing strategies on social media,” Birgita said on Tuesday (1/9/2026).
According to Birgita, Indonesian patients seeking treatment in Penang do not only originate from geographically adjacent regions. Direct flight access allows patients from several major cities in Java, such as Jakarta and Surabaya, easier access to healthcare facilities in Penang.
She noted that several considerations that frequently drive patients to choose Penang include communication with the medical team, service costs, service time, and the availability of medical equipment.
“The main reasons are smooth communication with the medical team, highly competitive treatment costs, efficiency in service time, and the availability of complete modern medical equipment,” Birgita remarked.
Nevertheless, the decision to seek treatment abroad should not be based solely on experiences circulating on social media. Patients still need to consider diagnoses, doctor recommendations, the need for follow-up examinations, the risks of medical procedures, and financial capacity.
Birgita also chose not to speculate on the parties behind the widely discussed content regarding appendicitis examinations. In her view, a patient’s decision to choose a healthcare facility should be based on their individual needs and conditions.
The case surfaced after a patient, known as influencer Fahira Almira, shared her experience undergoing examinations related to digestive issues. She had previously received a diagnosis of appendicitis in an Indonesian hospital but obtained a different diagnosis after undergoing examinations in Malaysia.
The discrepancy in examination results between healthcare facilities ultimately highlights the importance of a second opinion in certain conditions, especially when patients still have doubts regarding a diagnosis or a medical action plan. However, the decision to undergo further examinations must still be based on adequate medical information, rather than merely following the experiences of other patients on social media.
