The use of Electric Vehicles (EV) and electrification technologies continues to be implemented across various industries, including the mining sector. Moreover, the global mining industry is facing demands for transformation amid increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, and adopt sustainable practices.

Domestically, the implementation of EVs in the mining sector aligns with national energy transition policies and targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as outlined in the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC) and the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060 or sooner.

The legal basis for accelerating EV adoption is regulated under Presidential Regulation Number 55 of 2019 on the Acceleration of Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Programmes, which was updated through Presidential Regulation Number 79 of 2023. This regulation underscores the government’s commitment to promoting electric vehicles not only for urban needs but also for strategic industrial sectors such as mining.

On the other hand, mining industry players still face several challenges in implementing EVs for sustainable practices. Some of the challenges include the availability of charging infrastructure, the need for technological adaptation, and substantial initial investments; however, EV adoption is believed to provide long-term benefits for both the industry and society.

Therefore, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) continues to encourage all stakeholders in the mining sector to innovate, collaborate, and share experiences in applying environmentally friendly technologies.

Moreover, Indonesia has strategic opportunities in developing the global electric vehicle ecosystem. The country’s wealth of mineral resources, particularly nickel as the main raw material for EV batteries, positions Indonesia as an important player in the global electric vehicle industry supply chain.

The integration between the mining sector, mineral downstreaming, and the development of battery and electric vehicle industries opens up significant opportunities to strengthen Indonesia’s role in the global EV ecosystem while driving a more efficient and sustainable transformation of the mining industry.

In response to these challenges and opportunities, CNBC Indonesia is hosting the EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026 with the theme “The Future of EVs in the Mining Industry: Between Efficiency and High Investment”. The event will take place on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, from 09.00 to 12.00 WIB at the St Regis Jakarta - Caroline Astor Ballroom.

This forum will feature strategic dialogues bringing together regulators, industry associations, mining business actors, and stakeholders.

The EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026 aims to review opportunities, challenges, and the industry’s readiness in adopting EV technology, particularly from the perspectives of efficiency, investment, and regulation, while encouraging cross-stakeholder collaboration to strengthen the mining electrification ecosystem in Indonesia towards a more competitive and sustainable industrial future.
