Security in Jakarta
From Media Indonesia
The increasingly uncontrolled security situation in the
capital has pushed the governor to equip his civil servant
security personnel (peace and order officer) with tear gas
pistols. I agree with him because his decision to equip them with
tear gas pistols is based on the real situation in the field,
where gangs of criminals or street vendors or members of the
society who are being reprimanded by them often attack them
physically. It is hoped that the tear gas pistols, which may
cause pain to the eyes of those shot at, will minimize the
attacks, in which security personnel are sometimes killed.
It is understood that the weapons will be issued only to well-
selected personnel who will also be trained on how to operate the
pistols, when and where to use them effectively without causing
the public fear. On the contrary, we the public at large, are of
the hope that with those tear gas pistols the civil security
forces will be able to safeguard the capital and protect the
residents from criminal gangs, in cooperation with the police.
