Security for water system increased

The city-owned water company PAM Jaya is deploying over 2,310 employees to safeguard its water distribution networks.

Syamsu Romli, the firm's president, said over the weekend that the employees, who are will be on stand-by 24-hours-a-day three days before and after the leadership meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum next week, are to prevent the possibility of distribution stoppage.

"PAM Jaya also will strive to safeguard the networks after the APEC conference to secure normal distribution of water to its customers," he was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.

He said that his company managed to uncover 3,850 pilferage cases involving losses of about Rp 3.5 billion (US$1.6 million) as of last month.

"I will bring the cases of water theft to court in a bid to help settle the problem," he said. (hhr)
