Security during the MPR session

Security during the MPR session

We appeal to all the leaders of political parties and mass
organizations, as well as those of other civilian groups, not to
send their security units to the upcoming session of the People's
Consultative Assembly (MPR). This is also the stance taken by
President Abdurrahman Wahid who, as founder of the National
Awakening Party (PKB), has prohibited its Banser and Ansor
paramilitary units as well as other organizations belonging to
the PKB or the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) from guarding the MPR during
its session.

Since we are at present asking the police and the military to
reform themselves, restraint on the part of civilians in security
matters is called for. Naturally, however, we would like to see
the TNI and police perform their duties as well as possible in
order that the unity and cohesion of the nation may be preserved.
In matters of defense and security, professionalism on the part
of the military and the police is what our people demand.
