Secret method to disable Google's AI feature and revert to classic search
Google’s AI Overviews feature, which provides concise answers summarised from various sources at the top of search results, has simplified information retrieval for many. However, numerous users find it disruptive, preferring the classic blue-link layout or expressing concerns over information accuracy. Google has not provided a primary toggle to fully disable the feature, stating it is now integral to its search service, similar to existing Featured Snippets. A little-known but effective method to instantly remove AI summaries involves appending ‘-ai’ (hyphen followed by ‘ai’) to any search term. For example, searching ‘resep rendang sapi -ai’ will eliminate the AI panel, displaying only traditional website links as seen in older search versions. This trick leverages Google’s longstanding search operators. The hyphen (-) excludes results containing the following term, so ‘-ai’ signals the system to omit AI-generated content. It works on both desktop and mobile without additional settings or apps. While Google documents these search operators, the specific AI exclusion function is rarely publicised, leading many to consider it a ‘secret trick’. Alternative methods include using the ‘Web’ filter after searching, which displays pure website links without summaries, or appending ‘&udm=14’ to Google’s URL for automatic classic results. Browser settings can also be adjusted to apply this code automatically. Since its widespread rollout, AI Overviews has sparked mixed reactions. While some appreciate quick answers without visiting multiple sites, others cite inaccuracies, fragmented information, and concerns that original content sites are receiving fewer visits as users rely on summaries. Google has affirmed it has no plans to remove the classic search option, ensuring users who prefer the traditional experience still have a viable path forward. For those disturbed by AI features or preferring direct source access, appending ‘-ai’ offers the quickest, simplest, and most effective solution.
