Seaport to improve workers conditions

Seaport to improve workers conditions

JAKARTA (JP): The Tanjung Priok seaport administrator,
Soenardjo, is determined to improve the quality of human
resources at the port, particularly stevedores.

"For this purpose laborers who have been less productive, due
to old age, will eventually be retired," Soenardjo said.

On the other hand, he said, the port's management will
continue improving the skills and abilities of laborers, still
considered productive, through special upgrading courses.

Soenardjo said that at present there are 5,203 stevedores at
the port. "Almost half of them are more than 50 years old."

Those considered not productive are advised to write letters
of resignation, he said. "Then they will be given severance
money," Soenardjo said. (bas)
