SINGAPORE (AFP): Leading U.S. electronics firm Seagate Technology Inc. is to set up a new manufacturing plant in Malaysia to support operations in Indonesia and Singapore, officials said yesterday.
The move was announced after Seagate chief executive officer Al Shugart said in remarks published Wednesday that his company might not invest further in Singapore because of "unfair competition" from a government-owned company.
Shugart said Seagate was concerned over business confidentiality following the takeover of rival American electronics company Micropolis Corp.'s disk drive business by state-owned Singapore Technologies group.
