Sea Mine in Strait of Hormuz Claims Victim
A sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz has claimed a victim. A tanker exploded after striking a sea mine while attempting to pass through the vital shipping lane for global oil and gas.
According to Iran’s local media, Mehr News Agency, and the Defapress website, the tanker hit a sea mine after sailing outside the navigation route designated by Iran on Sunday (26/7). No details regarding the tanker’s name or country of origin have been released, and there is no immediate information on casualties.
Iran has previously warned that shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz is only permitted through routes it has established. The strait has become a central point of tension between Iran and the US. Washington launched a series of attacks against Iran, and Tehran retaliated by targeting US military facilities in Gulf states.
US President Donald Trump stated on 8 July that the memorandum of understanding with Iran had ended and accused Tehran of violating the ceasefire agreement. The two nations subsequently resumed attacking each other, battling for control over the Strait of Hormuz. The US demands unimpeded freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway, while Iran insists vessels pass through routes near its coastline under a navigation mechanism it manages alone.
The US had launched attacks on Iran for at least 13 consecutive days before halting its strikes for the past two days. According to reports from The New York Times and Axios, President Trump decided to postpone plans to attack Iran amid concerns that an escalation of the war could dangerously deplete already dwindling supplies of Patriot missile interceptors and other air defence munitions in the Middle East.
In addition to exchanging attacks with the US, Iran has been intercepting ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz outside its designated routes. At least six vessels turned back after being intercepted by Iran. “Last night, six ships attempting to pass through routes other than those designated were stopped by the IRGC Navy with warning shots and subsequently turned back,” Iranian state television reported.
