SEA Games marksmen still lead Kapolri Cup
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's 19th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games
shooters continued to dominate on the second day of the seventh
Kapolri Cup and 1997 Bhayangkara Cup shooting championships.
The Kartika team's Heri Kiswanto won the Rapid Fire Pistol
event with 551 points.
Teammate Djoko Wisunu came second with 546 and Hans Wibowo
from the Bimantara club was third with 526.
The results were far from the national record of 582 points,
which Iriantoni set at the 15th Anniversary Cup here in 1993.
Heri's record was also far from the SEA Games record of 581,
which belongs to Thailand's O. Ruengpanyavuth.
Heri, a military officer, said he had not been in the national
training program since March because he had to compete at the
three-week Military World Championships in Australia last month.
"I had no chance to practice after returning home. I competed
here but my results were so bad," he said.
Heri was still included in the training list but had no idea
if he would be picked in the final squad for the Games from Oct.
11 to Oct. 19.
In the SMB sport rifle prone, the Executive Shooting Club's
Elly CH, who is being groomed for the biennial event, won with
580 points.
Another Games shooter Yasmin Arub from the Sriwijaya club
finished second with 574 points trailed by Kartika's Titik
Sumarni with 573.
Elly fell nine points short of the SEA Games record which was
set by Thailand's Kunwadee at the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai,
Thailand.
The national record is 588, which belongs to Erlinawati Chalid
from the 1993 interbranch shooting championships.
Coach Glenn Clifton Apfel said he was not satisfied with the
results.
"Tomorrow maybe better because our athletes will compete in
SEA Games disciplines," he said.
Today will feature the men's and women's air pistol matches
and the small bore free rifle prone matches. (yan)
