SEA Games cars

SEA Games cars

From Suara Karya

According to media reports, the organizing committee of SEA
Games XIX, held in Jakarta in October 1997, imported luxury cars
for the purpose of this event. These cars were reportedly exempt
from import duty.

Of course, these luxury cars were imported to be used by the
participants of the Games. However, one may wonder where these
luxury cars are now.

I am curious about this matter after reading the
accountability report of the consortium assigned to organize the
Games to the effect that it sustained billions of rupiah in
losses. The report said nothing about the luxury cars nor what
had become of them.

Well, where are the cars now? In fact, these luxury cars could
be used to cover the losses by selling them to the public.

One may harbor a suspicion, then. Who knows whether certain
individuals in the consortium/organizing committee sold these
cars? It seems the state minister of youth and sports affairs and
the central board of the National Sports Council (KONI) must
seriously look into this matter, especially now that there is an
economic crisis. Do not let certain individuals from the
consortium or the organizing committee benefit from this.

I hope the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), which has
been investigating irregular use of public funds in sports, will
inquire about this matter from the minister of youth and sports
affairs and the central board of KONI. Who knows, these cars may
have been distributed among certain people to enrich themselves.
