Scotland Yard to aid Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): The Malaysian government has sought the
help of Scotland Yard and the British Anti-Crime Enforcement
Department to help it nab hardcore criminals who have eluded the
law, news reports said on Monday.

Dr. Rais Yatim, minister in the prime minister's department,
told the New Straits Times daily that the pact was made during
his recent visit to Europe.

Apart from engaging the assistance of the famed British
sleuths, Rais said the government also had plans to re-equip its
Cheras Forensic Center.

"This may cost the government quite a bit in the future after
having spend 40 million ringgit (US$10.45 million) to build the
center, but it will be futile if we do not equip it with the
latest facilities," Rais said.

The rate of serious crimes has been on the rise in Malaysia,
with the government attributing the increase to an influx of
illegal immigrants.
