Countries across Europe are currently being hit by a historically deadly heatwave, with temperatures soaring dramatically above 40 degrees Celsius. Several nations have reported more than 10,000 excess deaths as the record-breaking extreme heat scorches the western part of the continent. This drastic surge in mass fatalities, described as a ‘hellish’ phenomenon, is a highly unusual event and reflects the fatal impact of global climate change.

According to a Reuters report, the overwhelming majority of the victims—more than 9,000 deaths—were among the elderly aged 65 and above. The grim data was published by the European Mortality Monitoring Project (EuroMOMO), a network supported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The extreme weather is known to cause death by inducing heat stroke or aggravating cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases. With the absence of other major triggers, such as a virus outbreak, experts believe the extreme heat is the sole primary cause behind this humanitarian tragedy.

‘Experiencing this kind of excess mortality at this time of year is unusual. It is really high,’ said Lasse Vestergaard, Chief Physician at Denmark’s Statens Serum Institut, which hosts EuroMOMO. ‘It is difficult to explain this high excess mortality with anything other than the extreme heat,’ Vestergaard added. Aggregated national mortality statistics from 27 European countries recorded a total of exactly 10,650 excess deaths during the week of 22 June to 28 June, the peak of the heatwave. This figure contrasts sharply with the previous eight weeks, where the combined death rate was actually below normal levels.

The climate disaster has not only claimed lives but also crippled power supplies, forced school closures, and shattered temperature records in France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. EuroMOMO noted that France and Belgium experienced particularly high levels of excess mortality. For Belgium, the death toll was recorded as the highest compared to any heatwave in the country’s history since 2000. A separate study by Imperial College London estimated that 2,700 people died in England and Wales during the period, with 42% of those deaths attributed to human-induced global warming.

The WHO reports that populations in tropical and subtropical climates are chronically exposed to high temperatures, while in mid- to high-latitude regions, exposure is seasonal. Heat affects health through various direct and indirect mechanisms. Outdoor workers, athletes, and civil protection staff are particularly vulnerable due to physical exertion. Urban and rural poor populations are also at greater risk due to low-quality housing and lack of access to cooling. The body’s inability to regulate internal temperature and eliminate excess heat increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, placing significant strain on the heart and kidneys. Extreme temperatures can worsen chronic conditions and cause acute kidney injury. Heat-related deaths and hospitalisations occur rapidly, necessitating swift interventions when warnings are issued. The heat can also disrupt essential health services by causing power outages and transport issues, while reducing work productivity and increasing the risk of accidents.
