Scissors, Gas Lighters, and Jumbo-Sized Shampoo Confiscated at Makassar Hajj Embarkation Point
The Hajj Organizing Committee (PPIH) at the Makassar embarkation point confiscated dozens of prohibited items from prospective pilgrims’ cabin baggage during X-ray screening at the Sudiang Hajj Dormitory.
The confiscated items included scissors and other sharp objects, gas lighters, liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) in large containers such as shampoo, liquid soap, hand lotion, and packaged drinks. There were also traditional foods without expiration date information.
The discovery indicates a continued lack of understanding among pilgrims regarding international flight safety regulations.
The items were immediately secured before the pilgrims departed for Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.
Mawardi Siradj, Head of Public Relations at PPIH Embarkasi Makassar, demonstrated the confiscated items in the Mina Hall of the Sudiang Hajj Dormitory. “Here are some items that are prohibited by international flight regulations from being carried by pilgrims before boarding the plane,” he said.
The security rules for flights are regulated in the Minister of Transportation’s Decree Number KM 39 of 2024 concerning the National Flight Security Program and the Director General of Air Transportation’s Regulation Number SKEP 43/III/2007.
Sharp objects, lighters, and lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods that are prohibited in the aircraft cabin.
For liquids, only a maximum of 100 milliliters per container is allowed on international flights, with exceptions for medical drugs, baby food, and special dietary needs.
Mawardi regretted that many pilgrims still brought large-sized liquids. “This rule has been socialized repeatedly since the Hajj preparation in their respective regions. But in reality, there are still those who bring jumbo-sized shampoo to their cabin baggage,” he complained.
No less worrying, officers also found traditional foods without expiration labels.
“It should not happen that when pilgrims consume these foods during quarantine or on the flight, it actually disrupts their health. They initially wanted to perform Hajj comfortably, but instead they get sick and cannot carry out the pilgrimage.”
PPIH hopes that this discovery will be an important lesson for all prospective pilgrims to be more compliant with international flight regulations.
“Safety is the top priority. Comply with the rules so that the Hajj pilgrimage runs smoothly and safely,” said Mawardi. (LN/E-4)
