Scientists have discovered something extraordinary inside a fossilised dinosaur dropping millions of years old. Within the petrified remains of its meal were traces of feathers believed to have come from ancient birds. The finding provides direct evidence of dinosaur feeding habits that had never previously been confirmed.

According to a report by Phys.org on Tuesday (15/9/2026), the fossilised dropping was found in a soil layer dating from around the Cretaceous period. When researchers examined its contents under a microscope, they were surprised to find structures that were clearly parts of feathers. The shape and arrangement of the fibres did not come from ordinary reptiles, but bore the distinctive characteristics of bird feathers.

The discovery of feathers within dinosaur droppings carries enormous significance. Scientists had long suspected that some carnivorous dinosaurs also preyed on ancient winged animals, but that suspicion had never been directly proven.

Now, the presence of intact feathers within the digestive remains is the most concrete evidence yet that these dinosaurs regularly caught and ate the ancient birds that lived alongside them.

Moreover, the fact that the feathers remain identifiable in shape shows that the dinosaur did not chew its food to pieces. It swallowed prey in large chunks, so parts of the body such as feathers were not broken down in the stomach and were ultimately preserved as fossils that could be studied millions of years later.

The finding also strengthens the idea that birds lived side by side with dinosaurs for a very long time. Indeed, during that era, birds had not yet fully become masters of the skies and were instead one of the food sources for the giant creatures that roamed the land.

This means the relationship between birds and other predators was already established hundreds of millions of years ago. At that time, birds did not enjoy the safe environment of today.

They had to remain constantly vigilant, both on land and in the air, as many predators were ready to catch and eat them — as proven by a pinch of feathers left behind in the dinosaur’s droppings.
