Extreme large-scale solar storms have the potential to disable global power grids, damage navigation satellites, and trigger what is often referred to as an ‘internet apocalypse’. To anticipate such a worst-case scenario, a group of scientists has proposed a radical idea: spraying specific chemical substances directly into Earth’s magnetic field.

This unique proposal was submitted by an international team of space researchers in their latest study. The objective is to strengthen or modify the magnetosphere—the natural shield protecting Earth from dangerous radiation—to enable the deflection of super-fast charged particle bursts released by the Sun during Coronal Mass Ejections (CME).

Technically, the plan involves a fleet of specialised satellites or rockets tasked with releasing certain chemical elements, such as barium or lithium, into Earth’s radiation belt regions. When these chemicals interact with solar radiation, they will ionise and create an artificial plasma cloud. This cloud would then function as an additional ‘bumper’ to absorb or divert the destructive energy from solar storms before it reaches Earth’s upper atmosphere.

“We must begin thinking about active protection for our modern infrastructure in space and on the Earth’s surface,” stated one researcher in the report. “While this method may sound like science fiction, it could theoretically provide tactical protection in sensitive areas most vulnerable to geomagnetic disturbances.”

Despite the promise of protecting GPS systems, aviation communications, and underground electrical transformers, this macro-scale project has sparked intense debate within the scientific community. Many other researchers warn of potential side effects that are not yet fully understood.

There are concerns that injecting foreign materials into the magnetosphere could disrupt the natural stability of the Van Allen radiation belts. The adverse impacts could jeopardise functional satellites currently orbiting Earth or even trigger new, unpredictable types of space weather disturbances.

At present, the proposal remains in the stage of computer simulations and early theoretical modelling. Scientists emphasise the need for in-depth research and very strict international regulations before this space geoengineering technology is ever physically tested.
