Science-Based Food Policy Urged for Processed Foods

The debate over ultra-processed food (UPF) is now a major focus in various countries, including Indonesia. Responding to diverse perceptions of processed food, the Indonesian Association of Food Technologists (PATPI) has stressed the need for food policies based on scientific evidence. PATPI Chairperson Giyatmi emphasised that science must be the primary foundation in formulating food policy. She cautioned that the debate should not be based solely on perception or global trends. “Indonesia needs food policies built on scientific evidence to address nutritional, safety, and food security challenges, while also encouraging national industrial innovation. Food technology is not the problem, but part of the solution,” Giyatmi stated at a national seminar in Jakarta on Tuesday. In line with this, the Ministry of Health’s Director General of Primary and Community Health, Maria Endang Sumiwi, outlined the policy direction towards the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision. The main focus includes the development of Future Food and Healthy Food, as well as correcting misconceptions about UPF through the strengthening of food technology. Head of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), Taruna Ikrar, highlighted the need for regulations that are adaptive to scientific and technological developments. BPOM emphasised strengthening the surveillance system based on scientific risk assessment, labelling policies, and fortification to ensure the quality and nutritional value of processed food. The expert discussions enriched the debate on product reformulation and the relevance of UPF classification in the local Indonesian context. As a concrete step, the seminar produced the PATPI 2026 Policy Brief on Future and Healthy Food and PATPI’s Scientific Position on Ultra-Processed Food (UPF). These documents are projected to become strategic references for all stakeholders in strengthening food sovereignty towards the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
