Schroeder may cancel Asian visit
GERMANY: German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will likely cancel a
planned trip to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam, a
report said on Wednesday.
Bild newspaper said in a press release that Schroeder would
postpone the trip due to fears of SARS and his uphill battle to
win support for economic reforms within his own Social Democratic
Party (SPD).
The normally well-connected Bild made the statement available
to reporters but did not include the report in Wednesday's
edition.
Schroeder had planned to visit the four Southeast Asian
nations from May 10 to May 17, accompanied by economics minister
Wolfgang Clement and a delegation of 25 German business leaders.
