Schools in Natuna Implement Distance Learning Due to Haze from Kalimantan Forest Fires
Hundreds of students in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands (Kepri), have been forced to undergo distance learning (PJJ) due to the impact of smoke from forest and land fires (karhutla) originating from Kalimantan.
The Natuna Regency Education and Culture Office has implemented home-based learning for levels ranging from Playgroups (KB), Kindergartens (TK), Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs), to Junior High Schools (SMP) in the Serasan and Serasan Timur districts.
“It is true, our children cannot attend school in person due to the unhealthy smoke drifting from the forest fires in Kalimantan,” said Nasria, Secretary of the Natuna Education and Dissemination Office, when confirmed on Tuesday (2/9).
Nasria stated that this home-based learning period is effective from 31 August 2026 until 5 September 2026.
According to her, students will return to normal in-person classes once air quality returns to normal. Meanwhile, the management of Senior High Schools (SMA) falls under the authority of the Riau Islands Provincial Education Office.
“We will see how it develops; once the air is healthy, our children will return to learning as usual at school,” she added.
Based on data from the Natuna Education and Culture Office, the following schools in the Serasan and Serasan Timur districts are affected by the haze from Kalimantan:
- Serasan District
SMA: SMAN 1 Serasan
SMP: SMP Negeri 1 Serasan, SMP Negeri 2 Satu Atap Serasan, SMP Negeri 3 Satu Atap Serasan
SD: SD Negeri 001 Serasan, SD Negeri 002 Serasan, SD Negeri 003 Tanjung Balau, SD Negeri 004 Jermalik, SD Negeri 005 Pangkalan, SD Negeri 006 Batu Berian, SD Negeri 007 Hilir
KB/TK/MTs: KB Intan Permata, KB Permata Bunda, MTs Swasta Ibnu Hajar
- Serasan Timur District
SMA: SMA Negeri 1 Serasan Timur
SMP: SMP Negeri 1 Serasan Timur
SD: SD Negeri 001 Arung Ayam, SD Negeri 002 Air Nusa, SD Negeri 003 Payak, SD Negeri 004 Air Ringau
