Schools in Labuan Bajo Closed Following NTT Earthquake

A number of schools in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), were closed following an earthquake that shook the region today. Among the schools closed were SDK Yosefa and SMPN 1 Labuan Bajo.

“Closed for today only,” said the head of SMPN 1 Labuan Bajo, Wilibrodus Cungkuru, on Saturday (15/8/2026).

Wilibrodus said a number of students had already arrived at the school this morning. After receiving information about the earthquake, the school decided to suspend teaching and learning activities for the day.

“This morning some of the children had already arrived at school,” Wilibrodus said.

Observations at SMPN 1 Labuan Bajo showed the school gate was tightly shut. No one was visible inside the school complex.

It is known that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 shook Nagekeo Regency, NTT, this morning. As of 08.45 Wita, BMKG had recorded 44 aftershocks in the NTT region.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located at sea at a depth of 15 kilometres, approximately 38 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, NTT. The tremors were felt strongly in several areas of NTT, NTB, and as far as South Sulawesi.

The earthquake that shook Labuan Bajo caused damage to a number of buildings, including resorts and four-star hotels. Hotel guests rushed outside, while coastal residents flocked to leave their homes out of fear of a tsunami.
