Schools in disrepair in S. Kalimantan

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: At least 40 per cent of 3,018 primary school buildings in South Kalimantan were in serious disrepair, a local official said.

Abdullah Amin, head of the South Kalimantan education office, said the 1,200 damaged buildings, found in all regencies and municipalities across the province, were built in the 1970s and have since never been repaired.

He said on Thursday that rehabilitation work was expected to cost around Rp 1.2 trillion, suggesting that priority should be given to the most seriously damaged buildings based on a thorough selection.

Meanwhile, local educational observers and academics deplored the small budget allocated for education in the province, which was not conducive to the promotion of quality human resources. -- Antara
