School Renovations Targeted for Completion by 2029, Minister Proposes Budget
President Prabowo Subianto has targeted the renovation of all schools and educational units in need of repair to be completed by 2029 at the latest. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti stated that the budget has been requested from the Ministry of Finance.
“We are still requesting the budget from the Ministry of Finance for an additional allocation in 2027,” Mu’ti said at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026).
Nevertheless, Mu’ti mentioned that efforts are underway to secure funding for 2027. The school renovation programme will cover the entire country.
“For 2025 and 2026, God willing, what has been agreed with the President can be completed, so that later in 2027, we will strive to secure a budget for 100,000 educational units, hopefully. But we are still proposing this again to the Minister of Finance,” he said.
Regarding the government’s plan to establish centralised studios, Mu’ti stated they will be built in Jakarta. The teachers will be selected from the best and the initiative will begin this year.
“The centralised studio will be built in Jakarta, where we previously had an educational TV studio. We will use that studio again, renovate it, and improve it according to the needs for a studio as conveyed by the President earlier,” he explained.
“We will start the teacher studios this year,” he added.
The school renovation target was announced by Prabowo during his speech at the plenary session on the Draft State Budget at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026). Prabowo said the state must ensure all children have a safe and proper place to learn.
“We will complete the renovation of all schools requiring repair by 2029 at the latest,” Prabowo said.
“For me, the state must ensure every schoolchild studies in a safe and dignified school. Schools are where Indonesian children build their future,” he continued.
Prabowo stated that the condition of damaged schools must not be ignored and passed on to the next generation. Therefore, the government will accelerate the school renovation programme.
“But we understand that many of our children still study with leaking roofs, perhaps even collapsed roofs, cracked walls, damaged toilets, perhaps no toilets at all, and unsafe classrooms. We must not bequeath this situation,” he said.
The Gerindra Party chairman said school renovations will be accelerated in 2027 and 2028. Prabowo stated this is the largest renovation programme in history.
“The programme to renovate all schools and educational units requiring repair will continue to be accelerated in 2027 and 2028, and must be completed by 2029 at the latest. This is the largest school renovation programme in our history,” he explained.
