School Ready to Take Responsibility After Alumni Claims Bullying Led to Mental Illness
SMA Negeri 2 Bantul has finally spoken out regarding a viral post containing a narrative that an alumnus experienced bullying to the point of developing a mental disorder after graduation. The school has stated it is ready to take responsibility.
The Head of SMA Negeri 2 Bantul, Isti Fatimah, conveyed her deepest apologies to the survivor, their family, and the wider community for the discomfort and situation that occurred. “SMA Negeri 2 Bantul is fully committed to being open and cooperative, should there be an investigation or evaluation process in the future,” Isti explained in a written statement received on Saturday (20/6/2026).
“We are ready to take responsibility for this incident. If in the future it is proven that there were violations, abuse of authority, or negligence committed by individual teachers or the school, we are ready to accept sanctions and consequences in accordance with civil service regulations and applicable laws,” she stressed.
Isti added that the school is using this incident as a momentum for evaluation and to ensure the learning environment at SMA Negeri 2 Bantul becomes better for all students in the future. “The school is opening the door to communication as widely as possible. For members of the public, parents, or related parties who wish to convey criticism, input, or further information, please use the school’s official channels so that communication and service improvements can be well established,” she concluded.
Previously, a social media post by an alumnus of SMAN 2 Bantul claiming to have experienced bullying and subsequently suffering from mental illness after graduation drew public attention. The post was uploaded to a Threads account two days prior. The account owner also uploaded a medical certificate with the doctor’s name and hospital stamp blurred. The medical certificate stated the account owner underwent outpatient treatment, with the diagnosis column listing several mental disorders ranging from depression to bipolar disorder.
“I am a graduate of SMA Negeri 2 Bantul, and do you know what I got after graduating? Yes, that’s right, according to my medical record photo, I was diagnosed with mental illness after graduation,” the Threads account stated. The uploader claimed they were accused of a crime by a teacher and felt they were scapegoated. “I was framed for a crime at school by my own homeroom teacher and guidance counsellor, even though I was the one who uncovered the crime. The irony is, I was made the scapegoat by those irresponsible teachers, even though I was the hero. Worse, I was slandered at a parent-teacher meeting without my knowledge, resulting in my friends distancing themselves from me because their parents thought I was a bad kid, even though I never once smoked, drank, or anything like that. It’s funny that kids at school who liked to play online gambling and drink alcohol were left alone by the guidance counsellor,” the account continued.
