School Hours in Jakarta Limited to 2pm During Ramadan
The Jakarta Provincial Government has limited the duration of teaching and learning activities in schools during Ramadan 1447 Hijriah to no later than 2pm Western Indonesian Time. The policy applies to all educational institutions across the Jakarta region.
Jakarta Provincial Education Agency Head Nahdiana said the adjustment to school hours was made with reference to a joint circular from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
"We are aligning with the joint circular from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. We have also issued a circular stating that learning hours will be adjusted, with the latest finish time being 2pm," Nahdiana said when met at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday, 19 February 2026.
According to her, the limitation on learning hours is intended to provide students with space for independent learning with their families as well as religious activities in their communities and respective places of worship during the month of Ramadan.
The government has agreed on a learning scheme during Ramadan 2026. This was decided in a ministerial-level meeting chaired by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno on Thursday, 5 February.
Also present at the meeting were Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti, along with senior and mid-level officials from relevant ministries and institutions. The government divided the school schedule into three parts: learning outside educational institutions, face-to-face instruction, and post-Ramadan holidays.
Learning outside educational institutions will take place from 18 to 20 February 2026. Face-to-face instruction will run from 23 February to 16 March. Post-Eid school holidays will be held from 23 to 27 March.
According to Pratikno, Ramadan represents an appropriate moment for character education. For this reason, learning during this year's Ramadan will focus on character building, as well as the balanced fulfilment of learning rights.
Pratikno said character education would be carried out through various social and educational activities for students, including sharing takjil (breaking-fast refreshments), distribution of zakat and charitable donations, and religious competitions.
"We are directing learning to strengthen religious values in accordance with students' religions and beliefs, whilst simultaneously fostering social awareness and positive habits," Pratikno said in an official statement quoted on Friday, 13 February 2026.
Pratikno encouraged regional governments and educational institutions to follow up on the Ramadan learning scheme policy with adaptive and contextual technical arrangements. "Without diminishing the substance of the national policy that has been established," he said.
