The gold business of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) Region Office VIII Surabaya recorded significant growth up to May 2026. The gold savings product was the largest contributor, with the number of accounts increasing by 92.57 percent, or an addition of more than 31,000 new accounts. The new student admissions period also boosted gold pawning transactions. Throughout June 2026, the value of pawn financing at BSI RO VIII Surabaya exceeded the monthly average, surpassing IDR 50 billion, and is expected to continue rising until mid-July. “The need for funds for school fees is making people use gold as a source of financing. This pattern occurs almost every year. Usually, demand increases during Ramadan and the new school year, then eases in August before rising again in the fourth quarter,” he said during the NGOPI (Ngobrol Penuh Inspirasi) Media Gathering at the BSI RO VIII Surabaya Office on Friday (26/6/2026). Not only pawning, two other bullion products also grew rapidly. The gold instalment product increased by 89.6 percent, while gold pawning rose by 74.1 percent year-on-year. Jajang assessed that this trend shows the growing public interest in Sharia-based gold investment. BSI’s bullion products are now in demand across various age groups, from Gen Z and millennials building investment portfolios to people using gold as a hedging asset. “BSI’s bullion business has enormous potential for continued growth. Our gold products are present as a relevant financial solution for the community, both for long-term investment planning and meeting urgent liquidity needs,” he said. The company’s evaluation shows that Gen Z has been able to drive growth in gold account openings, but the investment value is still relatively small and their transaction activity is not yet sustainable. “Last year we managed to attract many Gen Z to open gold accounts. However, the nominal investment was still small and most were not actively transacting after opening the account. Therefore, this year we are focusing more on professionals and entrepreneurs who have regular income so that their investment activity is more sustainable,” Jajang explained. To expand services, BSI RO VIII Surabaya continues to add to its office network. After opening seven new outlets throughout 2025, the company is preparing to operate the Surabaya Benowo Sub-Branch Office in 2026. This expansion is accompanied by strengthening digital services through the BYOND by BSI application. BSI is also holding an investment literacy programme called BSI Fresh Point every Sunday in the courtyard of the BSI RO VIII Surabaya Building on Jalan Basuki Rahmat. The programme targets cyclists, runners, and people active in the Basra Loop area by providing gold cleaning services, Sharia investment education, basic health checks, and free public facilities. “Through the BSI Fresh Point activity, we want to be closer to the community. Not only as a financial partner providing bullion product education, but also as a social and spiritual companion that brings real benefits to the community,” concluded Jajang.
