School building in South Central Timor collapses, one dead
Kupang (ANTARA) - An old school building at SD Inpres Oepula in South Central Timor Regency (TTS), East Nusa Tenggara, has reportedly collapsed, resulting in the death of a pupil. TTS Police Chief AKBP Hendra Dorizen, contacted from Kupang on Thursday, stated that the building had long been out of use but was frequently used by children as a play area. βThe building has not been in use since 2023, but children often use it for playing,β he said. The deceased victim was identified as Noldi Kause (9), a first-grade pupil, who was struck on the head by falling debris. In addition, two other children were victims, one sustaining serious injuries and the other minor injuries. Local residents, upon hearing the sound of the collapse, rushed to the scene to evacuate the victims and provide assistance. One victim with serious injuries was immediately taken to Soe General Hospital for medical treatment. The Police Chief and his team visited the site to conduct scene processing and assist with the evacuation. Based on preliminary investigations, the building is believed to have collapsed due to its dilapidated condition from age. The structure was built in 1991 and was no longer fit for use. The police have urged the public to increase vigilance regarding old buildings that pose a potential danger, particularly to children.
