Schedule for Isbat Session on the Determination of 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri for Eid al-Fitr
Jakarta — Eid al-Fitr 2026 is fast approaching. Its official determination must still proceed through an isbat session conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The isbat session for the determination of 1 Shawwal is held at the end of Ramadhan. Its purpose is to observe the position of the hilal (the new crescent moon) at sunset.
As has been done previously, hilal observation will also be conducted at several locations throughout Indonesia.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs will conduct the isbat session on Thursday, 19 March 2026, coinciding with 29 Ramadhan 1447 H. The session will take place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium of the Ministry of Religious Affairs office, commencing at 16:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
The isbat session will involve numerous stakeholders, including astronomy experts from the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), planetariums, observatories, representatives of Islamic civil society organisations, and other relevant institutions.
The following is the sequence of the isbat session proceedings:
Seminar on hilal position
Verification of hilal sighting reports from various regions
Conduct of the isbat session
Official announcement of the determination of 1 Shawwal 1447 H by the Minister of Religious Affairs
Potential Differences in Eid Celebrations 2026
Differences in Eid celebrations may occur, similar to the commencement of Ramadhan. Muhammadiyah set the start of Ramadhan at 18 February 2026 for 1 Ramadhan 1447 H, before the government and Nahdlatul Ulama did the same the following day.
Similar potential differences may also occur at Eid. Muhammadiyah, through the Statement from the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah Number 2/MLM/I.0/E/2025, has already determined that Eid al-Fitr will fall on Friday, 20 March 2026.
Meanwhile, according to the Hijri calendar published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 1 Shawwal 1447 H is set for Saturday, 21 March 2026.
However, all of this remains subject to change. The government’s decision is still awaiting the isbat session scheduled for Thursday next week.
