Scavenger killed by colleague

JAKARTA: A scavenger was stabbed to death on Monday by his colleague, an ex-convict, while the pair divided scraps they had collected in Penjaringan area, North Jakarta.

The victim was identified as Hasim, 35.

Hasim's friend, Marno, told The Jakarta Post that the dispute between Hasim and Jumali, the suspect, started when they argued over a piece of plywood found in the area, where the city administration demolished hundreds of temporary houses last month.

Hasim insisted that the plywood belonged to him since he was the one who found it, however Jumali accused Hasim of being unfair as he had taken more scraps than he collected.

"Jumali got angry and then stabbed him," Marno said, adding that the suspect was a hot-tempered man.

Hasim's body was then sent to the morgue at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta.

Penjaringan Police are still searching for Jumali, who fled soon after stabbing his colleague.--JP
