Scavenger finds live grenade

BEKASI: An unidentified scavenger found a live grenade in the yard of the Harapan Jaya market in North Bekasi on Friday while searching for recyclable trash, a police officer said.

The Bekasi Police officer, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, said the scavenger handed over the grenade to Teguh, a parking attendant at the market and Teguh then passed it on to Iwan Setiawan, the driver of a pedicab.

Iwan reported the grenade to the Bekasi Police after handing it over to the security post of a company on Jl. Seroja, North Bekasi, for safekeeping.

The Bekasi Police's chief of detectives, Adj. Comr. Hendro Pandowo, confirmed the finding of the grenade, adding that it had been handed over to the Jakarta Police.

"Myself and a number of other police officers took the grenade to the Jakarta Police," Hendro was quoted by Antara as saying, adding that the police had no idea about the provenance of the grenade. -- JP
