Scavenger boss takes off with Rp 120m

BEKASI: Scavengers at Bantar Gebang dump, Bekasi, have decided to report the chairwoman of the Association of Indonesian Scavengers (IPI), Cathy Lengkong, to the police for allegedly swindling money from them totaling Rp 120 million (US$13,050).

"She took Rp 200,000 from each of the 600 members to make IPI membership cards which she said would enable us to get a loan of Rp 1 billion from a bank in Bekasi," a scavenger coordinator Muhamad Donny was quoted as saying by Antara on Monday.

The scavengers said that Cathy had not been seen in Bantar Gebang for six months now, although she had promised to distribute the membership cards within a week of collecting the money.

"We'll give her two months to contact us and settle the matter before we take the case to the authorities," Muhammad said. -- JP
