SBY's Message to TNI: Do Not Engage in Practical Politics
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to remain neutral in state affairs and prohibited the institution from engaging in practical politics. SBY expressed this in his presentation at the Supermentor 28 on Leadership event at St Regis, Jakarta, on Tuesday (14/4/2026). At the time, SBY recounted the TNI’s success in rescuing a ship from Somali pirates during his leadership. “I am proud of the TNI for carrying out that task because they were professional and fulfilled their constitutional mandate. Therefore, as a former supreme commander, I pray that our TNI in the future will be even more victorious and stronger for our country,” he said. However, as a participant in the ABRI reforms, SBY asked TNI elements not to enter practical politics. SBY is known as one of the generals who led structural changes to abolish the dual function of ABRI. “As a former participant in the ABRI reforms, remain focused on your primary duties according to the constitution. Do not enter practical politics. Remain neutral in democratic life, neutral in elections to ensure fairness,” he stated. “Remember, the TNI, Polri, and State Intelligence Agency belong to the people, to all of us. We will be proud of a TNI that is great and skilled, but also obedient to democracy and the rule of law,” he added. In addition, SBY conveyed a message to the younger generation as future leaders. He emphasised the importance of building strong character, not giving up easily, and being part of the solution. “Be men and women of ideas and action. Build character to become tough individuals who do not give up easily,” he advised. SBY also encouraged the younger generation to have an optimistic spirit and the courage to face failure.
