SBY: Try Sutrisno was a soldier and patriot

Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono paid tribute to Try Sutrisno whilst attending the funeral of the former Vice President. Try was buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta after passing away on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Yudhoyono attended the funeral accompanied by his son, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono. Both participated in the burial ceremony led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

According to Yudhoyono, who remained an active military officer during Try Sutrisno’s vice presidency, the New Order-era leader was a fighter. “He was a soldier and patriot, he was a leader, he was an example with his family, and above all, he was a statesman,” Yudhoyono said at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery following the burial procession.

Try Sutrisno’s funeral ceremony took place as a military service. Yudhoyono and Edhie stood among the mourners as a line of soldiers fired a salvo in final tribute to the deceased.

The body of Try, who died at the age of 90 at 06.58 local time this morning, was buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery around 13.30 local time. Try had previously been laid in state at a funeral home at Purwakarta Street Number 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta, and was prayed over at Sunda Kelapa Mosque.

President Prabowo welcomed the arrival of Try Sutrisno’s body at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery and accompanied it to the grave. The coffin was draped in the Indonesian Red and White flag. Indonesian National Armed Forces soldiers carried the coffin.

Prabowo subsequently opened the funeral ceremony attended by hundreds of people, including TNI soldiers. The President acted as ceremony inspector, which opened with a reading of the deceased’s life history.

“I, President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the state, nation, and Indonesian National Armed Forces, hereby present to the beloved homeland the soul and services of the late Try Sutrisno, position of the sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 1993-1998 period,” Prabowo said. The Gerindra Party Chairman also prayed that the deceased’s spirit would find the best place beside God.

A number of officials attended Try Sutrisno’s funeral ceremony. In addition to Prabowo and SBY, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka was present, along with TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar.

Other figures such as Jusuf Kalla and Boediono, both former vice presidents during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration, also attended.
