SBY remembers Try Sutrisno as a patriot and statesman
Jakarta — Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has remembered the late Vice President Try Sutrisno as a patriot and statesman.
SBY, accompanied by his son Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, Vice Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly, attended the military funeral ceremony for Try Sutrisno at Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta on Monday afternoon.
“He was a soldier and patriot. He was a leader, an exemplary figure with his family, and above all, he was a statesman,” SBY said, recalling Try Sutrisno’s legacy after the ceremony at Kalibata Cemetery.
In rain-soaked conditions, SBY and numerous state officials and dignitaries participated in the funeral procession, which included full military rites. The funeral ceremony was led directly by President Prabowo Subianto, who served as the ceremony’s chief inspector.
“I, as President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the state, nation, and Indonesian National Armed Forces, hereby present to the motherland the soul, body and services of the late individual. Name: Try Sutrisno; Position: Sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, 1993–1998 term, Commander of the Armed Forces, 1988–1993 term. Son of the late Bapak Subandi, who has passed away in the interest and honour of the state and nation on Monday, 2 March 2026, at 06.58 Western Indonesian Time in Jakarta. May the path of dedication he undertook serve as an example for us all, and may his soul find the best place beside Almighty God. Jakarta, 2 March 2026, President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto,” read the proclamation recited by President Prabowo for the late Try Sutrisno.
Following this, the ceremony continued with a final tribute to the deceased before the coffin was lowered into the grave. President Prabowo then symbolically filled the grave by scooping one spade of earth into it. The grave was then filled by cemetery staff, accompanied by the placement of a gravestone.
Near the grave, President Prabowo supervised the grave-filling, accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, along with three military chiefs of staff: Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal M. Tonny Harjono, Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago.
President Prabowo then placed a wreath on behalf of the state on Try Sutrisno’s grave and offered a final salute to him. The wreath-laying was then continued by representatives of the family.
The ceremony proceeded with a prayer led by Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar. The ceremony concluded with a final tribute from all attendees, accompanied by music from the TNI military band.
After closing the ceremony, President Prabowo presented the Indonesian flag that had covered the coffin and the proclamation text to the family of the deceased.
Try Sutrisno, who served as the Sixth Vice President during the administration of second President Soeharto, passed away whilst receiving treatment at the Central Military Hospital of the Army Medical Corps (RSPAD) in Jakarta on Monday morning. The late figure died at the age of 90.
