SBY Remembers Try Sutrisno: A Pious, Patriotic Statesman
Jakarta — Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has remembered the late General (Retired) Try Sutrisno as a statesman who has provided an example for the nation and state.
Following the funeral of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, SBY expressed deep condolences over Try Sutrisno’s passing. He described the late general as an individual of exemplary character, both in his life as a soldier and as a national leader.
“He was a pious individual, he was a soldier and patriot, he was a leader, he set an example for his family, and above all he was a statesman,” SBY said at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026.
According to SBY, Try Sutrisno was known not only as a military figure but also as someone who upheld the values of service to the nation. SBY also explained that Sutrisno’s leadership served as inspiration both within the military and throughout his service in government.
As is known, Try Sutrisno’s passing closed the long journey of a soldier whose career began in 1960, starting as a presidential aide, ABRI commander, and reaching its peak as Indonesia’s sixth Vice President during the New Order period.
