SBY Apologises for Missing Independence Day Ceremony at Palace Tomorrow

Indonesia’s sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), has apologised for being unable to attend in person the ceremony marking the moment of the Proclamation of Independence at the Merdeka Palace on Monday (17/8).

He also apologised for missing President Prabowo Subianto’s State Address at the DPR on Friday (14/8) because he was undergoing medical examinations in Rochester, United States.

“This August, I am in Rochester, United States, to undergo a series of medical check-ups. I will complete my medical examinations at the Mayo Clinic at the end of this August,” he said in a video statement on Sunday (16/8).

He explained that the medical examinations are carried out routinely every year because he underwent prostate removal surgery in 2021. SBY said the examinations at the Mayo Clinic were also in line with the recommendations of the presidential medical team.

On this occasion, SBY also wished the Republic of Indonesia a happy Independence Day. He then personally apologised for not being able to join the celebrations in the homeland tomorrow.

“I would like to use this good opportunity on this historic and joyful day for the Indonesian nation to say, Long live the Republic of Indonesia,” said SBY.
