Sawmill threatens to lay off 100 workers

RAHA, Southeast Sulawesi: A big sawmill company, PT Kedaung Nusantara, in Raha, Muna regency, has threatened to lay off around 100 workers because of a lack of raw materials.

Hasanuddin, chief of the local manpower and transmigration office, said he had received an official letter from the company informing him of the planned lay-offs.

The company is facing a shortage of logs as the result of a recent raid on illegal logging and the closure of PT Perhutanda Sultra, a company which had a monopoly on the log trade.

Hasanuddin said he had no idea about how to prevent the lay- offs, adding that he would first consult with the Muna regent.

Confirmation was not immediately available from PT Kedaung Nusantara as the company is located in a remote area. The company currently employs 400 workers.
