Saving Energy, DPR to Turn Off Lights at 6:00 PM WIB
The House of Representatives will implement power outages to limit energy use in the parliamentary environment. DPR Secretary General Indra Iskandar stated that lights and room cooling or air conditioning in work rooms and meeting rooms will be turned off from 6:00 PM WIB until morning. According to him, this earlier power outage will be carried out if there are no meeting agendas left. Initially, the DPR planned to turn off the lights at the latest by 8:00 PM WIB. However, recently, the DPR General Secretariat has revised that policy. “This will be shortened further, to 6:00 PM WIB,” said Indra when contacted on Friday, 27 March 2026. Indra said that there will later be a working group to monitor electricity use in the DPR building rooms. It is known that the DPR has begun saving in the midst of efficiency plans to face potential crises due to the war between the United States and Israel against Iran. Indra mentioned that the DPR Secretariat has discussed various aspects of savings and future work patterns. In addition to electricity use, savings in the parliamentary environment will target other budget posts, such as civil servant official travel and vehicle operations. Indra said that official travel will be limited only to very urgent matters. On the other hand, the DPR will also reduce fuel oil or petrol consumption for vehicle use by officials of the DPR General Secretariat, from echelon III to echelon I. Indra stated that the vehicle operational savings scheme is still being prepared. Furthermore, he said, the DPR is also currently evaluating the reduction of catering for meetings. “For meetings, snacks and lunch are reduced, and eliminated if it’s only a short meeting,” he said. President Prabowo Subianto previously expressed his desire to save to face potential crises due to the war in West Asia. He conveyed this in the full cabinet session two weeks ago. In that session, Prabowo gave examples of other countries that have already saved, namely Pakistan. That country is said to be saving because it considers this global crisis equivalent to the Covid-19 pandemic. “They even reduce salaries for cabinet members, for DPR members and all these salary savings are collected to help the most vulnerable groups,” said Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Friday, 13 March 2026. Pakistan, said Prabowo, also implemented a work from home policy for civil servants and private sector employees. For savings, Prabowo said, the South Asian country also reduced working days. Not only that, Prabowo mentioned Pakistan which requires government agencies to reduce official vehicle use by up to 60 percent. Prabowo said other countries also stopped overseas visits for savings. “They reduce, no government funds may be used for party events and so on. Then, all their higher education institutions moved online, all schools stopped for two weeks,” said Prabowo. According to Prabowo, these various policies can reduce fuel oil consumption whose prices and supplies are fluctuating due to the war between the US-Israel and Iran. The Gerindra Party General Chairman hopes that Indonesia can also carry out savings.
