Increasingly violent crime, including the use of firearms, appears to be hitting the greater Jakarta area, or so we read in media reports.

A mobile brigade member was shot dead on Jl. Soesilo, Jakarta (Merdeka, Aug. 2) as he escorted a consignment of two kilograms of gold. This act shows that criminals today are no longer cowed in their choice of victims.

It is even more interesting that they handle firearms skillfully and without any seeming doubt about missing their targets. Where do they get their firearms?

Let us hope that the security forces, and not only the police, will help round up these criminals who use firearms.
