Saudi Crown Prince MBS Makes Surprise Call to Erdogan: What's Happening?

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) held a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday local time. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional security developments, particularly the situation in the Middle East and the Red Sea.

During the call, the leaders reviewed existing cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Turkey and explored ways to strengthen ties across various sectors. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the discussions also covered the region’s conditions, which are facing heightened tensions.

Beyond strengthening bilateral relations, MBS and Erdogan highlighted the security situation in the Red Sea, which has recently drawn global attention due to increasing threats to international shipping lanes.

In the conversation, Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s condemnation of attacks launched by Iran-backed Houthi groups against vessels in the Red Sea. He also conveyed Ankara’s full support for Saudi Arabia in maintaining regional stability.

The Turkish President welcomed the formation of a Saudi-led multinational maritime defence coalition. According to Erdogan, the initiative is expected to enhance international shipping security while safeguarding the smooth flow of global trade.

The leaders’ discussion took place amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and threats to the strategic shipping lanes in the Red Sea. The area is one of the world’s most important trade routes, connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.
