Saudi Arabian Ambassador Asks Megawati to Play Active Role in Middle East Dynamics
Jakarta - The Chairman of the PDI-P Central Executive Board, Ahmad Basarah, revealed that the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Indonesia, Faisal Abdullah Al Amoudi, requested former Fifth President of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri to play an active role in responding to the dynamics of conflict in the Middle East region.
The request was conveyed during a meeting between the Saudi Ambassador and Megawati at her residence in the Menteng area of Jakarta on Thursday (9/4/2026).
“According to the Saudi Ambassador, Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri is an important figure in local and global politics who has concerns for environmental and geopolitical issues; therefore, Ibu Megawati’s voice is very important and impactful on the Islamic world and globally to maintain regional stability and world peace,” said Basarah in his official statement on Thursday.
Megawati even expressed support for the ceasefire efforts agreed upon for two weeks in the region.
“Ibu Megawati responded positively to the request from the Saudi Ambassador; she also supports the ceasefire that has been agreed for 2 weeks and, following the geopolitical teachings of Bung Karno, Ibu Megawati is ready to be a bridge for anyone in conflict to achieve true peace,” Basarah revealed.
In the meeting, Megawati was accompanied by several PDI-P elites, including Ahmad Basarah, Andi Widjajanto, and Guntur Romli.
In addition to discussing geopolitical issues, Basarah said the meeting also touched on bilateral relations and Megawati’s experiences performing Umrah after receiving an honorary doctorate from Princess Nourah University in Riyadh.
Basarah added that Megawati also proposed cooperation on tree planting in Saudi Arabia, including the idea of planting “Soekarno trees” in the Holy City area.
To the Saudi Ambassador, Megawati stated her readiness to collaborate through her role as Chair of the BRIN Advisory Board.
“The Saudi Ambassador was very pleased with Ibu Megawati’s proposal and explained that Saudi Arabia indeed has a programme to plant 10 billion trees. Therefore, he will welcome Ibu Megawati’s offer with open arms,” he concluded.
