Saudi Arabia Tightens Return Procedures for Umrah Pilgrims, Overstay Risks Sanctions
The Saudi Arabian government is tightening the return arrangements for Umrah pilgrims with new, more coordinated procedures. At the same time, local authorities are issuing stern reminders for pilgrims not to exceed their visa validity periods. Citing Gulf News on Monday (23/3/2026), the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah stated that these measures aim to facilitate the smooth return process for pilgrims from the Holy Land. Pilgrims are requested to coordinate with their Umrah organising companies to ensure travel schedules and complete check-out processes with accommodation providers. Additionally, pilgrims are advised to ensure timely departures to the airport and arrive at least four hours before their flight schedules. The Saudi government emphasised that the deadline for Umrah visa holders to leave the kingdom is 18 April. Authorities warned that violations of these rules will result in firm sanctions. These sanctions include fines, imprisonment, and deportation for pilgrims proven to have overstayed or remained beyond their visa validity. On the other hand, the Saudi Ministry of Interior also reminded citizens and residents not to assist pilgrims who violate visa rules. Assistance in the form of transportation, accommodation, or employment for violators will incur severe legal consequences. The government also requested all Umrah service providers to immediately report any overstay cases. Failure to report such violations will result in financial sanctions.
