Saudi Arabia Justifies Strikes on Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq as Self-Defence
Saudi Arabia has stated that strikes against targets belonging to Iran-backed groups in Iraq were carried out in self-defence, warning it would take further military action if the kingdom is attacked again.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the armed forces, in coordination with the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), struck specific locations in Iraq linked to attacks on the kingdom’s oil facilities.
The ministry asserted that the operation was conducted based on the right of self-defence guaranteed under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Saudi Arabia accused the Iran-backed groups in Iraq of adopting an irresponsible and escalatory approach, despite the kingdom’s efforts to help de-escalate tensions and maintain security and stability in the region. The ministry said these groups have violated international law and disregarded the principles of good neighbourliness and Islamic brotherhood.
