Saudi Arabia has expelled several Iranian military officials and embassy staff in Riyadh. The Saudi Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned what it describes as overt attacks by Iran on the kingdom’s territory and other regional states.

According to Arab News on Sunday (22/3/2026), in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, the ministry stated that Iran’s ongoing targeting of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, civilian infrastructure, diplomatic missions, and economic interests constitutes a clear violation of international law and norms.

It added that the attacks also breach the provisions of the Beijing Agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), as well as the principles of good neighbourliness and respect for state sovereignty.

The kingdom has reiterated its “categorical condemnation” of Iran’s attacks on Saudi Arabia, Gulf Cooperation Council states, and other Arab and Muslim countries, warning that further escalation will have serious consequences for relations.

The ministry said Saudi authorities have notified the Iranian embassy that the military attaché, his assistant, and three additional staff have been declared persona non grata and must leave the kingdom within 24 hours.

The statement reaffirmed a previous declaration issued on 9 March, which warned that Iran’s ongoing attacks represent further escalation that will significantly impact future relations.

Saudi Arabia also emphasised that it will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and security, citing its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
