Saudi Arabia Condemns Iran's Attacks on Gulf States: Disrupts Stability!
The Saudi government has issued a strong condemnation of the latest attacks by Iran against neighbouring Gulf states and ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Riyadh described Tehran’s actions as destabilising for the region.
The strong reaction from Saudi Arabia, as reported by Al Arabiya on Monday, came after Iran launched a series of strikes against Gulf states on Sunday in retaliation for the latest American bombardment.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s strong condemnation and denunciation of Iran’s continued behaviour that undermines the security and stability of the region,” read a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry released on Sunday.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry described the Iranian attacks as “a violation of the fundamental principles of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, the Charter of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the principles of good neighbourliness.”
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia denounced Iran’s repeated attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which it said “threaten the security and freedom of navigation.” Riyadh also condemned attacks against Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
“Reaffirming the Kingdom’s complete rejection of Iran’s violations of the sovereignty of friendly nations and its ongoing threats to regional security and stability,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry stressed in its statement.
Iran launched a barrage of missile and drone attacks towards neighbouring Gulf states, which host US military assets, on Sunday in retaliation for the latest US bombing, following an attack by Tehran’s forces on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz that caught fire.
Iran Says It Did Not Attack, But Defended Itself
Iran’s Foreign Ministry rejected the Western narrative that described the latest Iranian strikes as unprovoked aggression. Iran asserted that the attacks were a legitimate act of self-defence against ongoing violations by the United States and Israel.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General expressed concern over the “resumption of military confrontation” and Iran’s actions in the region.
Responding to this, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the situation was not merely a “military confrontation,” but a continuation of the blatant and unprovoked aggression launched by the United States and the Israeli regime on 28 February.
“Iran did not ‘attack’. Iran’s strikes against US military bases and assets stationed in the southern Persian Gulf constitute the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defence under legitimate international law and in accordance with the law,” Baghaei said, as reported by Iran’s Press TV.
