Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued early warnings of light, moderate to heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds across various major cities in Indonesia on Saturday.

According to the BMKG website in Jakarta, forecaster Ranika explained that a convergence zone extends from the Strait of Malacca to West Sumatra, from the Riau Islands to the Bangka Belitung Islands, and from Lampung to the central Java Sea.

Similar conditions have also been observed from Central Kalimantan to the Makassar Strait, and from Southeast Sulawesi to the western Banda Sea.

These conditions are capable of increasing the potential for rainfall cloud development throughout the regions affected by the convergence.

Consequently, the agency forecasts that several major cities will potentially experience moderate to very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds, namely the Ambon and Jayawijaya regions.

Meanwhile, several other major cities are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, namely the regions of Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bengkulu, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Semarang, Surabaya, and Banjarmasin.

Additionally, Palangkaraya, Samarinda, Tanjung Selor, Denpasar, Kupang, Makassar, Palu, Mamuju, Kendari, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke are also included in the moderate rainfall forecast.

Several other major cities are forecast to experience only cloudy conditions on Saturday, including the regions of Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, and Mataram.

Previously on Thursday (12 March), National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo called on officers to anticipate potential hydrometeorological disasters during the 2026 Lebaran holiday season.

In his remarks, the National Police Chief warned that the BMKG has predicted that weather conditions during the 2026 Lebaran exodus will be cloudy to heavy rainfall.

“Special vigilance is necessary against the potential for hydrometeorological disasters, particularly in southern Indonesian regions such as Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara,” he stated.
