Satpol PP Jakarta Apologises After Viral Enforcement Action Against Ice Cream Vendor at CFD, Promises More Humane Approach

The Jakarta Regional Police Patrol Unit (Satpol PP) has apologised following a viral incident involving the enforcement action against an ice cream vendor at the Bundaran HI Car Free Day (CFD) in Central Jakarta on Sunday, May 24, 2026. ‘The Jakarta Regional Police Patrol Unit (Satpol PP) extends its apologies for the discomfort and concern experienced by the public,’ said Satpol PP Chief Satriadi Gunawan when contacted by Kompas.com on Sunday. According to him, the regulations are in place to maintain public order, comfort, and safety for those engaging in activities or exercising. ‘We acknowledge that during enforcement, a humane approach, effective communication, and persuasive behaviour must always be prioritised,’ Satriadi said. The viral incident will serve as a basis for evaluation to ensure all Satpol PP personnel carry out their duties more wisely, professionally, and with greater empathy towards the public. From Instagram posts by @asalput and @infojkt24, several Satpol PP officers were seen surrounding an ice cream vendor who was standing while pushing a bicycle. The officers grabbed the vendor and some were seen pulling his arm. However, several members of the public, including a man in a red shirt, attempted to assist the vendor. ‘Thank goodness there was a red-shirted gentleman who dared to intervene with the Satpol PP to release him. Finally, the ice cream vendor was let go. I can’t imagine if he had been taken away. I would have joined him because I was his last customer,’ wrote @asalput.
