Sarwono laments loss of reefs

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: State Minister of the Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja tried to draw attention this weekend to the loss of precious coral reefs off Lampung, where the damage is largely being caused by fishermen using explosives.

During a visit to the port this weekend, Sarwono called on all parties in the province to take immediate steps to protect the environment, including marine resources, in the waters off Lampung.

He noted that manufacturing industries are also discharging their waste into the sea.

Sarwono said the situation in Lampung is not as bad as the one found in the bay off Jakarta.

He praised the Hanura Sea Cultivation Center in South Lampung for the successful efforts in breeding various marine life such as kerapu, kima, Napoleon, white kakap, lobster, oysters and others. (07)
