Sarong maker having difficulty meeting domestic demand
Pekalongan, C Java (ANTARA News) - Local sarong manufacturing company PT Pisma Putra Tekstil Pekalongan is exporting 70 percent of its production and has therefore difficulty meeting increased domestic demand, a spokesman said.
Destinations of the company`s exports include the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, Anis Sungkar, PT Pisma Putra Pekalongan manager, said here Monday.
"Frequently, international demand for sarong products increases ahead of Idul Fitri," he said here on Monday.
He said PT Pisma was now still dominating the international sarong market but maintaining this position was becoming tougher and tougher in the face of growing competition.
"Increasing competition is posed by India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia," Sungkar added. "But we should not be afraid of this competition because their sarongs are still being produced by home industries," he said.
"However, because we are export-oriented, meeting domestic demand is often difficult for us," said Sungkar who is also chairman of the Pekalongan branch of the Association of Indonesian Entrepreneurs (API).
He said the limited quantity of its sarong production put PT Pisma in trouble in meeting drastically increased demand from domestic agents ahead of Idul Fitri.

During the Muslim fasting month demand for sarongs usually surged with small orders ranging in quantity between 50 and 100 bales.
"Most of the orders come from other regions such as Semarang, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta." he said.
Pekalongan`s textile industry was not long ago threatened by bankruptcy because of the rising prices of basic textile materials such as cotton and by cuts in power supply from state owned electricity company PLN.(*)
