Sarcasm and Disappointment in the Acid-Spraying Trial of Andrie Yunus...

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Chief Judge, Colonel Chk Fredy Ferdian, sarcastically criticised the methods used by four members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) who are defendants in the acid-spraying case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus.

Fredy delivered this sarcasm during the continuation of the trial at the Military Court II-08 in Jakarta, which featured factual witnesses from the military prosecutor, on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

“I’m not an intelligence person, maybe my friends are the same. I see it’s so amateurish, it makes me annoyed looking at it,” Fredy stated in the courtroom.

For Fredy, the method used appeared careless and did not reflect the standards of an intelligence agency’s work.

“The way is really bad, messy. Is this how BAIS people work?” Fredy asked the witnesses from TNI BAIS.

“Play it smart. If there’s CCTV, you can wear a jacket, wear a mask, wear a cover. How could you do it in the middle of the road without covering your face, without a helmet. This becomes a laughing matter,” he continued.

Meanwhile, disappointment could not be hidden by the Commander of the Headquarters Detachment (Dandenma) of TNI BAIS, Colonel Infantry Heri Heryadi, when giving testimony in the courtroom.

“As the Commander of Denma BAIS, what are your feelings?” asked the judge at the Military Court II-08 in Jakarta.

“We are very disappointed. For more than a year, there have been no violations in our unit, not even disciplinary violations; this incident tarnishes the TNI’s name,” said Heri Heryadi.

The judge also inquired about the institution’s actions against the four members involved in the attack, including their current position status.

“What is their position status now?” asked the judge.

“They have become Pama Denma BAIS,” explained Heri.

Heri explained that the allowances previously received by those members have also been revoked by the institution.
